Mother Roaster Pratu Phi - Specialty Filter Coffee Lover’s Paradise!

Mother Roaster Pratu Phi - Specialty Filter Coffee Lover’s Paradise!

Watch the filter coffee master at work

Mother Roaster Pratu Phi is filter coffee lover’s wet dream. I was on the way to Wat Saket, Bangkok’s famous Golden Mount temple which is located nearby, I hadn’t actually plan to make a visit to Mother Roaster but since it was pretty early and I hadn’t had my morning coffee yet, I decided to make a quick stop.

That “quick stop” turned into a long stay as I spent a lot of time being invested in all the various types of fresh coffee beans Mother Roaster Pratu Phi offers.

Specialty Filter Coffee Only!

A cozy and warmly lit atmosphere makes this place very comforting and home-y

Mother Roaster actually has two branches, one at Talad Noi, the one I went to was at Pratu Phi, the more quiet location of the two.

Mother Roaster Pratu Phi’ storefront is very inconspicuous, you could walk past without even knowing that there was a heaven of filter coffee inside, so you could call this place a hidden gem.

Inside, the coffee shop’s decor is very industrial and minimal in nature, with gray concrete walls, and warm orange hanging lights.

You can tell that the owners here are seriously passionate in their love for filter coffee. Behind the counter is a wall where various V60s and Moka Pots are on display.

Quite the collection of filter coffee brewers and moka pots you got there

The coffee shop is quite small with only a few seating, yet the atmosphere is very cozy.

Personally, I don’t think I would be coming here to do some work on my laptop, the seating options and atmosphere doesn’t feel comfortable to be focusing on work for long durations.

But Mother Roaster Pratu Phi does seem like a place fitting to enjoy a cup of filter coffee or to read a few pages of that book you’re hooked on.

Mother Roaster Pratu Phi Menu

I know my coffee well, but this is just way too overwhelming

Make no mistake! While Mother Roaster Pratu Phi is a coffee shop, the only thing on the menu is single origin filter coffee.

A couple came by later and made the mistake of ordering a Latte, an honest mistake, I left shortly after they came in so I wasn’t sure if they stuck around, but i they did I hope they’ve been pleasantly surprised by the vast world of coffee.

There are so much coffee beans to choose from, you would be forgiven if you spent a good 20 minutes just trying to comprehend the menu.

If you are familiar with the wide world of teas such as the menu from Gimbocha (my favorite cafe in Bangkok), then you’ll be right at home with the complexity of Mother Roaster Pratu Phi’s menu

You have locally grown coffee beans ranging from:

  • Thep Sadej - white floral, jackfruit, sweet aromatic

  • Blue Magic - blueberry jam, blueberry cheesecake, rum raisin, puer tea

  • Jewel Series Black Pearl - cacao, grapefruit, pineapple, guava

To imported coffee beans like:

  • Columbian Hulia Supremo - blackberry, caramel, chocolate

  • Indian Mysore Nuggets - brown sugar, macadamia, walnut, buttery

  • Dominican Don Pepe - wine, grape, red wine, tea-like

If you are completely lost, don’t worry, you can ask the staff to help you choose which coffee beans best suit your preference.

Pricing

Filter coffee is known to be expensive compared to your regular espresso-based drinks. So it’s no surprise that all of the menu items at Mother Roaster Pratu Phi is above 100 THB, with the majority of the menu items coming it at around 200 THB if you choose an imported coffee bean.

Pretty pricy for a cup of coffee, especially in Thailand, but Mother Roaster Pratu Phi is a specialty filter coffee shop after all, so the pricing is kind of justified.

Mozart Coffee Beans

mozart iced filter coffee

This ain’t your regular old dark coffee, light in color, and vibrant in taste

I was lost in what to order so I asked the staff for some recommendations. My preferences were something light, fruity, and floral, to which the staff presented me with a few options of beans.

I chose the Mozart coffee beans because they smelled the most fruity and fragrant. I ordered mine iced, cause I wanted something refreshing.

The Mozart filter coffee was really refreshing, getting it iced was a great move, as it almost tastes kind of like fruit juice.

The flavor notes for the Mozart beans are listed as blackberry, rum, green grape, raisin, and toffee, to which I could taste a lot of the fruity flavor notes, not su much the toffee.

I am a huge filter coffee nerd, but I believe that if you don’t like the taste of regular coffee, filter coffee may be for you as these usually use lighter roasts which are less harsh and bitter and more fruity and tangy.

Conclusion

Pros

  • So many different coffee beans to choose from, with so many different flavors for every taste palate

  • The staff is really friendly and helpful in recommending you coffee beans

  • Everything is done with care and precision, the owners are really passionate about their work

Cons

  • Price is too expensive for coffee, it makes sense though, but still too expensive.

Overall I highly recommend you visit Mother Roaster Pratu Phi if you are a filter coffee lover. The menu is highly extensive with locally sourced coffee beans as well as internationally imported coffee beans. The owners and staff are also really passionate and friendly.

The only downside is that the price might turn some people off, 200 THB for coffee is way too much especially when you can find a simple latte for around 50 THB here in Bangkok.
