The Epicenter for Foodies in Penang
The Kimberley Street Food Night Market is a stretch of road where both sides are lined with established indoor restaurants as well as the the titular mobile hawker stalls that Southeast Asian street food is known for.
Though admittedly, Kimberley Street isn’t as impressive as the street food night markets in Thailand or Taiwan, This little street is still considered the best place to find some amazing local Malaysian eats in George Town, Penang.
During the daylight hours, Kimberley street may seem quiet and almost dead but once the sun sets, the street comes alive and you’ll soon start hearing the sizzling of the woks, and the visuals of the large crowds gathering at the Four Heavenly Kings of the Kimberley Street Food Night Market.
The Four Heavenly Kings
The Four Heavenly Kings is a nickname given in reference to the 4 most iconic hawker stalls dotted around Kimberley Street. These stalls are popular for a reason as some of them even have recommendations from the Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to fully sample every single offering at the Kimberley Street Food Night Market. It’s not that my stomach wasn’t up for it but it’s because the queues at each of these heavenly kings are insanely long, often stretching for dozens of meters. Some even reaching to the end of the street. I only have so much time to spend waiting in a queue…
Below are the Four Heavenly Kings of the Kimberley Street Food Night Market.
Kimberley Street Duck Kway Chap
One iconic hawker stall serves a popular dish called Kway Chap, Kwa Chap is a traditional Chinese (specifically Teochew) noodle soup dish characterized by its iconic flat and wide rice noodles that have been rolled up.
Typically Kway Chap is served with a soup based infused with spices and topped with mainly pork proteins. Being a majority Muslim country that doesn’t eat pork, succulent duck meat is served instead. What makes this specific stall so famous is that they have been serving Duck Kway Chap for over 30 years now and their Kway Chap noodle rolls are hand made using an old family recipe!
This dish is one that I highly recommend, the broth was an immense depth of flavor from all the stewing duck meat, a little salty, and a little sweet. The rolled noodles are also slightly bouncy and they do a good job at holding that delicious broth.
Super Star Chicken Feet and Kway Teow Soup
Not far from the first stall is the a famous Michelin Guide recommended street food stall that sells melt in your mouth braised chicken feet and noodle soup since the 1960s.
Though I didn’t get to try their famous braised chicken feet, I did get the chance to try their Kway Teow noodle soup. It’s a clear soup broth with a slight hint of pepper. The flat rice noodles are topped with a variety of goodies like fish balls, chicken meat, fried garlic, and organ meat.
While I personally didn’t find the Kway Teow “mind-blowingly” delicious, I still enjoyed it, it’s a damn good bowl of noodle soup. Though I had to wait in line for a good while before I actually get to order, and finding a seat was also a bit of a struggle.
Does it deserve the name “Super Star”? For me that’s to be decided, but don’t let my opinions stop you from trying it out yourself.
Penang Char Kway Teow
Some may say that the best place to get Char Kway Teow in Penang is at a humble little street food stall in front of the Sin Guat Keong Coffee Shop at the Kimberley Street Food Night Market.
I’ll be honest, is it the best char Kway Teow in Penang? No. It’s an Ok Char Kway Toew at best. The noodles are clumpy and lathered in a layer of grease. And there wasn’t much of a wok hei flavor that you’d come to expect from a good Char Kway Teow.
Another thing to note is that some of the ingredients are pre-cooked and are thrown in near the end of the cooking. From reading other reviews, there seems to be a lot of comments about this place being a food stall catered to tourists and not an actual representation of a local Char Kway Teow.
Though some reviews also say this is the best Char Kway Teow in Penang… So if you have the chance you could come to your own conclusions, but I would personally say, there is no need to go out of your way to try this one.
If you are looking for some very good Char Kway Teow, I heard that Siam Road Charcoal Char Kuey Teow is a really good place.
Si Koh Soup at the Traditional Home of Dessert
Ogling around The Kimberley Street Food Night Market, you’ll definitely notice several shops selling local Penang desserts. One famous dessert to try is the Si Koh Soup which you’ll find at a humble shop called the Traditional Home of Dessert.
Si Koh Soup is a local Penang dessert that closely resembles a Singaporean dessert, the Cheng tng.
Crispy shaved ice, a refreshingly sweet soup, topped with a array of fruits and nuts like gingko nuts, dried longan, red bean, and lotus seeds. It might sound weird but the Si Koh Soup is a perfect dessert to help you beat the Malaysian summer heat. Eating it felt like my body temperature was literally cooling down.
More of Kimberley Street’s Food Offerings
While the Four Heavenly Kings are the main “attractions” of the Kimberley Street Food Night Market, there are also a bunch of other foods that you can try here. There is a stall selling freshly fried chicken where the batter is flavor with shrimp paste!
Another highlight is also the Oyster Omelette, though the omelette is a little gelatinous compared to what I would find back in my home country of Thailand, nevertheless it’s full of smokey wok hei flavor which I absolutely adore.
One of my favorite street food items to snack on in Malaysia is Lok Lok, a variety of skewered veggies, fish balls, and proteins. You choose what you like and then cook them yourself in this pot of boiling soup broth. Then you choose your sauces and enjoy. It’s basically a street side hot pot.
The highlight of Lok Lok is the sauces, you get spicy and chunky chili sauce, Thai seafood sauce, a lighter vinegar sauce, and my personal favorite the peanut satay sauce.
THE Place for Desserts in Penang
I’ve mentioned briefly before that the Kimberley Street Food Night Market is also a great place to try some local Penang desserts. We’ve already talked about the Si Koh Soup at the Traditional Home of Dessert, but I want to draw your attention to the Dessert Old Time Delight Shop.
They serve similar shaved ice and sweet soups but I particularly like the Ice Kacang, a shaved ice dessert topped with grass jelly, some sort of cream corn mixture, and doused with 3 different flavored syrups. They also have an option to top off the Ice Kacang with ice cream but I held off on that.
Once again, very tasty and very refreshing, especially when you’re a hot and sweaty guy like me. :)
