Traversing Chiang Khan Skywalk, Glass Bridge Over The Mekong

Traversing Chiang Khan skywalk glass bridge over the mekong

Chiang Khan Skywalk is also known as Skywalk Phu Khong Ngeo after the standing Buddha statue.

On my recent trip to Chiang Khan, an attraction that I had to go to was definitely the Chiang Khan Skywalk, a vantage point atop a small mountain, 80 meters above the Mekong River, located at Tambon Pak Tom in the province of Loei.

When you come here you will have the pleasure of enjoying the magnificence of standing golden Buddha and of course the glass skywalk bridge that consists of 3 circular view points letting you absorb the full beauty of the 2 rivers that the it overlooks, the Mekong River and the smaller Hueang River.

Naturally, while scrolling through Instagram and Facebook, you’ll see a lot of scenic pictures on your feed, and when you are looking at places to travel, this is very inspiring. And so while doing my research on where to go and what to do in Chiang Khan, I stumbled across this location, and oh boy let me tell you, the pictures that people took at this place are very beautiful.

Tickets and a Ride to the Skywalk

The Rod Song Thaew that will send you up to the Skywalk looks like this, very modern and strong.

If you are staying at Chiang Khan’s Walking Street then the Skywalk is roughly 22km away and the path consists of many twists and turns with small winding roads.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), you won’t find many foreign tourists here as this place is hard to get to without being able to communicate in Thai. However, there is always a way, and that way is that you can ask your hotel or guesthouse to arrange a little Tuk Tuk or Rod Song Thaew (pick up truck) to pickup you up and send you off to the Skywalk.

The journey doesn’t end there however, when you arrive at the location you actually arrive at the car park, from there you will need to purchase a 60 THB (or 2 USD) ticket to enter the skywalk. Once purchased you will have to get on another pickup truck which will drive you up right to the skywalk.

*Note: There are other tiers for the ticket that gives you more benefits such as access to a nearby Elephant park and insurance in case anything happens on the glass bridge. In my opinion, I would say these aren’t necessary, the insurance feels like they just want a little bit more money off of you, and the elephant park feels unethical, although there is a nice café there along with some nice statues and flowers to take pictures. This is just my honest opinion.

The Towering Guardian Buddha

The buddha is coated in gold resin and it really feels like a guardian watching over the area.

The first thing you eyes will notice is the glorious Phu Khong Ngew Big Buddha standing at 19 meters tall guarding over the glass skywalk and peering into green plains of Laos.

At the feet of the statue, you can find some incense candles that you can use to pray and wish for a wonderful future.

In this area you’ll also find some seating areas decorated with flowers in which you can take a few pictures.

Tip Toeing Across the Glass Bridge

The skywalk may not look that high from the photos but believe me it is pretty high, and you’ll feel that when you come here.

The highlight is definitely the skywalk bridge by which the attraction is named. The skywalk spans into 2 paths, on the bridge are 3 circular spots where you can take pictures and view the landscape at 3 different angles. The whole structure is about 100 meters long and just under 2 meters wide and forms a half pentagon shape.

It was incredibly beautiful to see the delta at which the Mekong diverges. The landscape is a combination of grassy plains and forest covered hilltops. The view is absolutely gorgeous and of course, the weather is great at this height, with the cool winds hitting your face and causing your hair to fly all over the place.

They’ll provide you with bright rose colored foot wraps so that any debris on your shoes won’t scratch the glass.

One downside is that the glass floor isn’t entirely pleasant to look at as there are support beams crisscrossing all underneath. I understand it’s for structural support but it takes away from the whole glass floor concept when you can’t really see through the floor clearly.

If you come here in the morning the area will be covered by fog and the view will be totally different.

I’m not deathly afraid of heights but I’ll have to admit, while leaning against the railing to pose for a picture, I couldn’t help but feel a little uneasy that the railing will give or the glass would shatter.

You can also spot a little village by the river bank with a few boats going on and about.

If you are looking for photo inspirations you can look up this place on Instagram as many local Thais come here.

Also be sure to hold your phone very tightly!
