Fried egg noodles piled high atop of a bowl of the Netflix famous beef Khao Soi.

Known as “Khao Soi Netflix”, Khao Soi Lung Prakit Kaat Gorm is a small little street food restaurant hidden among the many small alleyways of Chiang Mai. Serving up delicious bowls of Khao Soi, which is a Northern Thai noodle dish made up of wide egg noodles bathing in a thick, rich, and spicy coconut curry broth.

It’s funny, noodles make up a big part of the Thai diet and as a Thai person I don’t really like Thai noodle soups all that much, but I absolutely love Khao Soi, it just hits different.

What Makes this Khao Soi so Special?

the small and cramp atmosphere at khao soi lung prakit

The vibe is very small and local, quite cramped with little space to move around.

But what makes Lung Prakit in particular so special? Well as the title of this article suggests, this restaurant was featured on an episode of Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil, the first episode in fact! After that, Khao Soi Lung Prakit has boomed in popularity.

We came literally 5 minutes after opening and the place was already packed!

Inside is a bit cramped but you’ll find on the far right wall, there are many pictures of famous celebrities and freeze frames from TV Shows, see if you can find Phil! There is also a picture of Mark Wiens somewhere up there if you look hard enough :)

Netflix fame isn’t the only thing that makes Lung Prakit so popular though, there are 3 things that I think are the true reasons:

  • Big Portions! - You can order either normal or special (larger portion), but honestly the normal is already massive.

  • Super Rich and Thick Curry Broth - When you mix up the noodles the soup gets absorbed and it almost feels like a gravy instead of soup

  • The Beef is Extremely Tender - A picture on the wall shows a TV host quoting that “the cow felt like it had just been killed”, my partner had a good laugh at that one.

What’s on the Menu?

ticket menu

At the table you’ll find this ticket to fill out your order.

While I was there, I was unable to find an English menu but don’t worry as the selections are limited so it is very easy to order what you want.

You can tell one of the friendly staff what you would like to order, they can speak English don’t worry, or you can fill out a little ticket on your table and hand it to the staff.

There are 3 things you can order: Khao Soi, Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Noodle Soup.

For all of these dishes you can order one of 2 portion sizes: Normal or Special

The Khao Soi and Noodle Soup comes with 3 protein options to choose from:

  • Beef

  • Pork

  • Chicken

For the Hainanese Chicken Rice you can choose either normal boiled chicken, fried chicken, or both.

Pricing

The pricing used to be cheaper at around 40 THB but due to the unfortunate state of the world we live in, the price of a bowl of Khao Soi has now increased to 50 THB (or 1.50 USD).

If you look close enough at the menu you can see layers of paper covering up the original price, form 40 THB to 45 to 50 THB etc…

The price is still incredibly cheap considering the portion you’re getting but it’s interesting to see the changes the restaurant had to go through relative the the state of the country’s economic history.

Beef Khao Soi

a bowl of special beef khao soi noodles

Look at that flavorful oily coconut curry broth!

I ordered the Special Beef Khao Soi. Tender braised beef resting on a bed of springy egg noodles all submerged in that decedent curry soup.

Of course you can’t forget the fried egg noodles sprinkled on top to give the Khao Soi an extra textural dimension.

I have to give it up to the egg noodles here! When eating Thai noodle soups I usually order mine with egg noodles or thin vermicelli noodles, Khao Soi noodles are thicker than your average egg noodle and these ones are springy and a little chewy. They remind me a bit of ramen noodles which I love.

The broth was very nice as well, more rich and thick compared to the other Khao Soi’s I have, some might like a more soupy texture, but I prefer this more. Creamy, spicy, aromatic, and comforting, you can never go wrong with any coconut milk based soup or curry.

If you are in Bangkok, another notorious eatery is the Michelin Bib Gourmand Jeh O Chula at Siam, this restaurant is located Chulalongkorn University and is famed for serving the absolute best and largest bowl of Tom Yum mama noodles around. red onion lime pickled greens

I like adding extra toppings but you don’t have to if you don’t like them.

All Khao Soi comes with a plate of pickled greens, shallots, and a wedge of lime. This is self serviced mind you, so you can get as much as you want. Also the water is self service too.

Adding these extra toppings into your already delicious bowl of Netflix grade Khao Soi will elevate the experience even further.

And trust me, you’ll need the sour bites of the pickles to cut through all the oily richness and fatty beef. A wedge of lime will also brighten up the whole dish while the shallots will give you a slight spiciness and crunch.

fried roasted red chilies

Don’t be afraid to add more chilies, they might look red and scary but they’re not that spicy.

The dried roasted chilies are a nice addition to add to your Khao Soi, they add nice comforting kick to the broth. I had heard that the chilies at Lung Prakit is very spicy but when I tried it that wasn’t the case. It did add a bit of heat but it wasn’t an extreme kick. I found myself constantly adding more and more throughout my meal just to increase the spiciness a bit more.

khao soi with all the toppings mixed up

Once you add all of your toppings it’s time to mix it up and enjoy!

Conclusion

Pros

  • Rich, thick, and creamy, coconut curry broth.

  • The most tender braised beef, chicken, and pork you can find in any Khao Soi.

  • The portions are really big, you’re sure to leave satisfied.

  • Despite a price increase, the price is still really cheap.

Cons

  • Service can be a bit slow due to the number of customers. Expect to wait in a long queue at every time of the day.

Overall I would definitely recommend you come here, all that is good in the world of Khao Soi can be found here: deliciously rich and creamy coconut broth, extremely tender braised meats, and nice springy egg noodles. In addition the portions are big and filling and the prices are also really cheap for what you’re getting.

The only real downside is having to wait a while to be seated and served due to the large amounts of customers that this place gets.
