Pasta Ama - Best Place for Brunch and Pasta in Bangkok

Pasta Ama - Top Notch Pasta in Bangkok

Amongst the concrete gray, Pasta Ama stood out with their bright yellow colors.

It was the night of Valentines Day and my partner an I were very hungry after a long day picnic-ing and playing with corgis at a Dog Cafe. Pasta is known to be a very romantic dish and so it was the perfect dinner to end the day, Pasta Ama was in our sights.

Located just a few steps away from BTS Ratchathewi, it’s difficult to miss this this bright yellow building one the side of the street.

but right from the get-go we were a bit confused as to where exactly is the restaurant. The building is bright yellow and there is a huge sign that literally said “PASTA AMA”, yes. But that’s the kitchen, there was no seating.

We later found out that the restaurant was combined with 3 other restaurants and they all shared the same building and seating, which was a little strange but sure.

Simple Ingredients Done Right

Pasta Ama, Hako, and Yim Yam all share the same building and interior.

A little disclaimer, Pasta Ama technically isn’t a pasta restaurant per-se. It’s more like a restaurant that just happens to serve pasta as part of it’s menu, and not plural either as they only have 1 type of noodle, the spaghetti.

So a little bit of false advertisement there but that’s fine because the pasta dishes were delicious, I’ll get to that later in the article.

Pasta Ama doesn’t make their own noodles, but the dishes all have one characteristic in common, they all use simple ingredients that is available in every super market, but they use it very well to create a truly amazing dish.

However, if you are looking for a restaurant that makes their own noodles, I would recommend Ranee’s Restaurant. By far, they have the best pasta I’ve eaten anywhere in Bangkok and it’s my favorite place for pasta (and pizza too).

What’s on the Menu?

A bit funny that their signature item is not a pasta dish…

The menu at Pasta Ama is pretty big, containing, of course, pasta, and other classic brunch items.

Interestingly there are also some Thai dishes on the menu such as the classic Pad Krapao and some Som Tums or Thai Salads. But you’re not here for those, oh no, you come here for the pasta.

On the brunch side you’ll find items such as:

  • Avocado Toasts

  • Scrambled Eggs

  • American Breakfasts

  • And much more…

On the pasta side, there are items such as:

  • Carbonara

  • BlackPink Pasta (squid ink pasta with a pink cream sauce)

  • Aglio e Olio

  • Cheesy Chashu Ramen Pasta

As you can see the dishes on offer range from classic offerings to wild and crazy. But I assure you no matter how weird it may sound, it probably tastes excellent.

For drinks they also have:

  • A wide selection of Coffee Drinks

  • Italian Sodas

  • Wine

You can go to Pasta Ama 2 times in a day! In the morning to grab an Avocado Toast and Coffee for brunch, and in the evening for a dinner with pasta and wine.

Pricing

As mentioned before Pasta Ama uses simple ingredients to make top notch dishes, and that is reflect in the pricing of their menu items.

Generally the dishes are about 190 THB (or 5.50 USD) each which is not bad at all, the portions are good as well, not too big and not too small, perfect to fill you up.

Where the price increase is with their more extravagant dishes that uses higher quality ingredients. The Australian Wagyu spaghetti that I ordered costs 400 THB (or 11.70 USD), considering the amount wagyu that I got, I think it’s totally fair. The most expensive pasta dish that I saw was their signature Sriracha Carbonara dish that came in at 519 THB (or 15.20 USD).

Pricing not bad at all compared to some other places.

Salmon and Spicy Fish Roe Carbonara

My partner ordered this one, and it was very good.

The first pasta dish that we got was the one my partner ordered, the Salmon and Spicy Fish Roe Carbonara.

Unlike the “Carbonara” that you’d find at a more casual place, here they prepared the carbonara sauce the traditional way with egg yolk and cheese, no cream at all.

This dish was good, it was creamy and very cheesy, although I didn’t taste much of the spice, in fact I think there was no spice at all. The salmon came in sashimi form and combined with the fish roe, it worked to create a nice creamy texture throughout the whole dish.

I could taste a little bit of the sharpness from the parmesan cheese that they put in here too which added a nice flavor to balance out the fattiness of the salmon and roe.

Scrambled Egg and Mushroom Toast

Who knew such a simple toast can be so good??

This one was a surprising one, honestly I decided to order this one on impulse, I saw it on the menu and thought it looked very fancy and chic and I wanted to feel like those food bloggers sitting at a Paris cafe in the late morning having brunch.

Anyway, the first bite of this Scrambled Egg and Mushrooms on Toast was absolutely divine. No joke I had a smile on my face when I took a bite.

The bread is Sourdough toasted with olive oil, The bread was so crunchy on the outside and soft and chew on the inside, and what makes it special is the olive oil which gives it a nice flavor and fragrance.

The eggs were also very silky and delicate, a little bit creamy as it’s not cooked all the way to dryness. The mushrooms were also very tasty as well.

This is a must try for sure! So simple yet so good.

Sliced Australian Wagyu Aglio Oilo

Sliced Australian wagyu aglio e olio

I ordered this one and my partner said that mine was better than hers ;)

This one both smelled and tasted incredible! If you don’t know, Aglio e Olio is a type of pasta dish where the noodles are cooked with olive oil, garlic, and chilies.

The thinly sliced Australian Wagyu is tender and flavorful, I can could taste a little bit of smokiness from the dry chili peppers that they used, not to mention the mouthwatering aroma of the garlic fried in the fragrant olive oil.

And there is a raw egg yolk too!

Break that up and let the yolk ooze throughout the pasta noodles and wagyu and it will completely change the texture, adding a little creaminess and richness to the dish.

The only thing that let me down was I really wish that they made their own pasta noodles instead of using store bought ones.

Aside from that, this one is another must try!

Ama’s Fried Chicken

Ama's Fried Chicken

Look at that mountain of fried garlic just caked on there!

We ordered this dish and a whim, originally we were going to order their grilled cauliflower but unfortunately they ran out.

The Ama’s Fried Chicken is piled high with fried garlic! Seriously, when we cleared the plate of the chicken all that’s left was enough fried garlic to fill a cup!

All that garlic meant that the chicken was very pungent in its garlicky-ness.

As for the chicken itself, it tasted pretty good although it’s not really crunchy, as if there was only a light coating of flour. The chicken meat was also too soft, I imagine they use a dark meat that has been marinating for a while.

All in all this dish was good.

Creamy White Mushroom Soup

The little splashes of olive oil gave it a rich texture and just made it look fancy to be honest.

Finally, we’ve come to our appetizer, which was served… last.

And this one was disappointing. Creamy? Yes. White Mushroom? Not really.

They added too much cream to the point where the Mushroom flavor became like a ghost that left it’s essence behind.

Not bad, but not good either.

Exploring Bangkok for Food Like This.

Bangkok is home to one of the largest food scenes in the world and I just love exploring the city to find small yet amazing places like Pasta Ama. You can literally spend a day just exploring one little alley and you wouldn’t even cover all the delicious eats that the street has to offer.

Being born and raised in Bangkok, it feels like a disservice honestly, to not share with you all the amazing food that this city has to offer. Of course you can find normal every day Thai dishes here but people often neglect that this city can offer more than your regular Tom Yum Soup and Green Curry.

More Great Eats in Bangkok

If you’re looking to explore more than just local foods or are tired of Thai food, then may I recommend these places to you to spice up your palette.

  • The Truffle Pasta at Ranee’s Restaurant is my all time absolute favorite plate of pasta, you can never go wrong at Ranee’s.

  • Dine at Mama’s Restaurant and order their Pani Puri at one of the most beloved Indian restaurants in Bangkok!

  • Looking for some tasty desserts? Go to Mil’s Toast House to find the most immaculate honey toast in all of Korea and Thailand!

  • Looking for an affordable Omakase experience without any compromises? Then I wholeheartedly recommend Mizu by Sankyodai.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Simple ingredients but done prepared beautifully, making for delicious food.

  • A good menu variety for brunch and dinner.

  • The price is not too expensive, really fair compared to fancier places.

Cons

  • Pasta dishes all were superb, but the other dishes could use a bit more work.

Overall I would definitely recommend you check out Pasta Ama, not only for their delicious food but also because the atmosphere and menu is really great for those occasions where you just want to hang out and chat with an old friend, or to bring your SO out on a nice dinner date. Not to mention the price is really great, not too expensive.

The only downside is that some dishes can be a hit or miss, but if you stick to pasta then everything should be all good.
